7 Pillars of Self Care

With hardly any time to spare, does self-care feel like another task on your to-do list? Do you find yourself surfing the internet for different ways to practice self-care but end up even more stressed than before? While the internet might be full of information about self-care, every person is unique and so the type of self-care you need will totally depend on YOU!

Self-care is a vast topic that can be understood better when divided into subcategories. It might sound overwhelming and too much work, but trust us, once you recognize what needs work in your life, you’ll be able to lead a healthier and happier life.

Introducing the Self-Care Pillars

To break it down, there are seven pillars of self-care that work in harmony to make your life better. However, finding the right balance between all seven might be too much. Simply focus on one area at a time and continue cultivating its benefits for a couple of weeks or a month and then move on to the next self-care pillar.

Ready to explore the pillars of self-care? Let’s get started!

  1. Mental Self-Care. Cultivating a healthy mindset through mindfulness is what mental self-care is all about. This type of self-care primarily focuses on keeping your mind healthy, growing your skills, lowering stress, and adding to your knowledge. This can be practiced by giving meditation a try to engage your brain in a whole new way of writing a journal to pen down your thoughts, and even taking an intentional break from all things digital to calm the mind and slow down.
  1. Emotional Self-Care. This self-care pillar focuses on giving attention to matters of the heart by adopting healthy coping mechanisms and practicing self-compassion. By giving this pillar of self-care attention, you can tap into the emotional turmoil that holds you back and find the tools that are needed to face challenges and setbacks with emotional responses that are a lot more healthy. Whether it is asking for help, setting boundaries, binge-watching your favorite series, or jotting down positive affirmations – emotional self-care is a sure shot way to cope with emotions better.
  1. Physical Self-Care. As the name suggests, this type of self-care is all about looking after your body and taking care of it by giving attention to exercise, nutrition, hygiene, and rest. By incorporating activities that are focused on your physical well-being you can boost your energy levels and self-esteem, both! For this, don’t skip meals, keep yourself hydrated, get 7-8 hours of sleep at night, and make sure you incorporate some sort of exercise in your daily routine.
  1. Environmental Self-Care. This pillar of self-care often goes unnoticed and not many of us pay attention to it. Environmental self-care is all about taking care of the spaces and places around you. When you take care of your environment, it will help develop a feeling of belonging and help you thrive! You can practice this by keeping your workspace tidy, decluttering your living space, and appealing to your five senses by lighting a candle or sipping on a hot cup of coffee, slipping into comfy clothes, or even listening to music that calms you.
  1. Spiritual Self-Care. Taking care of your soul and investing in activities that provide a sense of direction and purpose is what the spiritual self-care pillar is all about. Practicing activities that help in feeding the soul, finding meaning in life, feeling grounded, and developing a sense of belonging. This can be done by spending time in nature, helping out in your community, volunteering, and connecting to a higher power (whatever that might mean to you).
  1. Recreational Self-Care. This is perhaps the most talked-about self-care pillar – recreational self-care. It works on the principle of taking care of your inner child with hobbies, fun activities, and new experiences in life. Breaking free from everyday stressors and taking a break from the pressures of your to-do list is what recreational self-care is all about. It helps you enjoy the simple pleasures in life by getting creative, going out on adventures, switching up your daily routine, and even taking time to do nothing at all!
  1. Social Self-Care. While self-care is all about YOU, it is extremely important to connect with other people as well. Cultivating healthy relationships and connecting with people who resonate with you helps us by creating a sense of belonging and acceptance. You can do this by meeting up with people whose company you enjoy, paying a visit to your relatives, writing a letter (or an email) to a friend, or even joining a support group. This pillar of self-care is all about meaningful connections with others.

Moving Forward
