CBD and Diabetes: What We Know So Far

The more we dive into the world of holistic wellness and the benefits of alternative therapies, the more it becomes clear that hemp products like CBD (scientifically known as cannabidiol) cannot be ignored. But what is CBD? How can it potentially help people with serious illnesses like diabetes? Is CBD and Diabetes the next breakthrough duo?

For many, the association between CBD and marijuana is sufficient to prevent them from thinking about it. This can certainly cause anxiety if you are worried about getting higher, feeling cognitive impairment, or using products that are not necessarily legal. CBD – as much as it helps – is still misunderstood. Let’s dive into some of the facts of what CBD is and what it isn’t.

Introducing CBD

Along with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD is the main component of cannabis. However, CBD does not cause the “high” that many people get when consuming cannabis. For decades, CBD was considered inactive, but last year the FDA announced that due to the rare form of epilepsy in children (at much higher doses than available in supplements), Epidiolex was introduced in the market. Researchers are in the initial stages of studying other potential uses of CBD, including relief from anxiety, insomnia, chronic pain, and inflammation.

What Studies Show

When it comes to CBD & Diabetes, most of the studies of CBD on diabetes have been carried out on mice or rats. This is a problem because laboratory conditions, differences between animals and humans, and other controlled factors can affect research results. Just because CBD works for them doesn’t mean it works for all humans.

In one study, researchers tested CBD on mice with reduced blood flow to the brain. This is a complication of diabetes for some people. They found that CBD:

  • lowers hyperglycemia
  • lowers cholesterol levels, and “bad fat”
  • increases insulin production

Other studies of CBD on mice or rats have found that:

  • CBD tends to repel chronic inflammation and neuropathic pain that may potentially affect the limbs of diabetics.
  • Reduces the risk of diabetes. Another study found that CBD can fight the disease altogether.
  • Promotes “good fat”. CBD oil can help the body turn white fat into slimming brown fat. This can increase your body’s ability to use glucose.

All We Know About CBD and Diabetes

CBD has been shown to improve inflammatory levels and oxidative stress (the effects of free radicals in the body), according to research. Cannabinoids act on nerve endings to reduce pain and fight inflammation. Additionally, they can reach the root of the problem as opposed to painkillers that only provide temporary relief.

Diabetes is an inflammatory disease. Rampant inflammation can also cause insulin resistance. But with CBD, its ability to reduce diabetes-related oxidative stress, inflammation, cell death, and vascular hyperpermeability has been observed. American Journal of Pathology talks about CBD and Diabetes in the following words, ‘Oxidative stress and inflammation lead to diabetes and its complications. It plays an important role in the onset of diabetes.’

CBD can also improve insulin resistance and pancreatic health. In a study of insulin-naive type 2 diabetic animal subjects, subjects who received 100 mg of CBD twice daily (and other treatments such as tetrahydrocannabinoid and phytocannabinoid) had significantly lower fasting blood glucose levels.

Pancreatic health can also be improved with the use of CBD. CBD may help improve human pancreatic health, according to Rory Batt, who is studying the association between the endogenous cannabinoid system, CBD, and type 2 diabetes. Moreover, CBD also helps prevent the pancreas from being destroyed by excess immune cells.

Another potential use relating to CBD and Diabetes is that it can help improve diabetic neuropathy. Diabetic neuropathy is a painful type of nerve damage caused by hyperglycemia that damages nerves throughout the body. Patients often feel this on their feet and legs, which can be eased and relieved with the use of CBD.

Use Caution

CBD comes in a variety of forms, from droplets to capsules to vapes. However, the FDA does not regulate most of these products. The only form of FDA-approved CBD oil is Epidiolex, a prescription drug that treats two types of epilepsy. Therefore, it is essential that you use your due diligence to ensure that your CBD products of choice are actually what they claim to be.

Some common side effects of using CBD are as follows:

  • Fatigue
  • Drowsiness
  • Diarrhea
  • Thirst

CBD may also interact with other drugs such as blood thinners. Therefore, it is important to consult your doctor before introducing CBD to your body.
